Denominations

We are mainly Syrian Christians – Syro Malabar and Syrian Catholic.

Syro-Malabar is a prefix coined from the words Syriac as the church employs the East Syriac Rite liturgy, and Malabar which is the historical name for modern Kerala. We shall describe it as "Christian by faith, Indian by culture, and East Syrian/Syriac/Oriental in liturgy." Today, the Syro-Malabar Church finds herself as the second-largest Eastern Catholic Church in the world with over 5.1 million members worldwide.

However, in 21st century, inter-community marriages between Christian denominations happened. We identify mainly as Syrian Christians and Roman Catholic Syrian Catholic (RCSC) as denomination.

SOCIAL STATUS OF THE ARISTOCRACY

As we observed, the Paruvanany family, like other prominent Syrian Christian families, has maintained Aristocratic social status for many centuries. Here are our observations to back this up.

  •  Our family has a strong learning culture. In comparison to their peers, previous generations are better educated.
  •  We place a high value on the priesthood and the Nunhood, and we promote catholic spirituality.
  •  Our forefathers were more prosperous than other communities, owning large tracts of agricultural land.
  •  Our forefathers worked in trade, farming, the military, education, social service, and administration, among other things.
  •  We gave our best to the development of the local community and the church.

ETHNIC CHARACTERISTICS

Syrian Christians adopted many upper caste Hindu religious customs and intermarried during many persecution periods and battles between regional kingdoms. We are Middle Eastern on the father's side and Harappan/Indian subcontinent/Indo-Aryan on the mother's side. Here are our observations to back this up.

  • Our generation has greater athletic ability, a competitive mentality, and a more reserved culture.
  • The elder generation was very proud, had a Kshatriya attitude, and definitely lived the 'Land Lord' lifestyle. They held positions of leadership in the church, local governments, institutions, and so on.
  • Paruvanany Family members are generally well educated and academically gifted.
  • They have artistic and creative abilities, particularly in instruments, acting, drama, literature, and film production.
  • Political orientation is generally Center Left, with a stubborn refusal to give up and a rebellious desire for reforms.
  • We maintain a reserved culture that may have evolved from agricultural/trade tradition, as well as a close-knit family group.
  • Our employees have good trading skills and a higher level of business acumen.
  • Some members excel at socializing and networking.
  • Paruvanany Family members are deeply committed to the church and the Christian way of life, and they enjoy social work and community development.
